IIM Calcutta’s Professor of Finance and Control Dr. Rama Seth and her doctoral student Varun Jindal have bagged the Emerald India Best Paper Award at the recently concluded Fifth Pan IIM World Management Conference (WMC) for their jointly authored paper. The award carries a trophy and a certificate in addition to a monetary component. The award-winning paper, which is titled "A New Order of Financing Investments: Evidence from Acquisitions by India's Listed Firms," is a part of the doctoral dissertation work carried out by Varun.
By and large, medical education in India has been a closed profession. Out of millions who aspire to get an MBBS/BDS seat in a prestigious medical school, only few end up being in one of the 800 odd MBBS/BDS colleges that we have in the country. The competition becomes stiffer when it comes to obtaining a postgraduate seat in one’s preferred area of medical specialisation. Even after the recent addition, the postgraduate seats remain around 30% of the total number of MBBS/BDS seats.
China’s attempt to emerge as a key Intellectual Property (IP) hub began in 2008 with its formulation of the Outline of National IP Strategy (“IP Strategy”). This provided for a roadmap that will enable China to become a nation capable of creating, utilising and protecting IP by 2020. As part of executing this strategy China indulged in a number of judicial reforms to strengthen IP protection that included the establishment of a centralized jurisdiction over some hi-tech patent litigation, setting up a “three-in-one” adjudication for civil, administrative and criminal IP cases under a single tribunal etc.
V.K. Unni, Professor of IIM Calcutta took part in a CNBC-TV18 discussion on Corporate Governance titled ‘The Governance Code’. M. Damodaran, Founder-Excellence Enablers Private Limited and former Chairman of SEBI, Ketan Dalal, Managing Partner at Catalyst Advisors and former Managing Partner of PwC India, and Shriram Subramanian, Managing Director-InGovern Research were the other members taking part in the discussion which was moderated by Mridu Bhandari.
